The Six-Pack: National Championship Game Edition

CFB Huddle’s weekly preview column, The Saturday Six-Pack, took a hiatus for much of the 2016 regular season. A clear violation of Rule No. 76, if ever there was one.

2017 is a new year, and there’s no better time to play like a champion than on National Championship Night. In honor of the third College Football Playoff title game, The Six-Pack makes its triumphant return.

It’s rather remarkable that in two decades of Bowl Coalition national championship games and BCS title tilts, a rematch never occurred (and that’s a national championship rematch, before you cite LSU-Alabama and Florida-Florida State). Meanwhile, in all of three years of a Playoff, we have our first.

The uniforms and head coaches are the same, as well as some of the players. But Alabama and Clemson are two different teams in January 2017 than they were in January 2016. Fourteen of the Crimson Tide starters were either reserves, redshirts or high schoolers a year ago. That number’s 11 for the Tigers.

A championship game requires a championship beer, so recognition as the National Championship Six-Pack belongs to Beer and Brewing Magazine‘s Best Beers of 2016, Two Hearted Ale.

Crafted in Michigan-based Bell’s Inspired Brewing, this is the closest Jim Harbaugh will be to this season’s national championship.

Cheers to the next kings of college football, and to the Tigers and Tide, I offer this: No excuses, play like a champion.
