Bovada Heisman Odds: Latvia’s Chief Export

Bovada released updated Heisman odds Thursday. These will not impact the illustrious CFB Huddle Heisman Top 10 projection, but they might save the struggling Latvian economy.

Despite what some sports media outlets are likely to tell you about these Heisman odds, which have LSU running back Leonard Fournette at a 9/2 favorite, they are not “Las Vegas” odds. It’s an easily made mistake, given the dot lv domain.

LV = Las Vegas! Right?

Not quite. Off by about 16 hours, in fact, the time it takes to fly from Las Vegas to the Latvian capital of Riga. Dot lv is actually the top-level domain of Latvia, not a qualifier for Las Vegas-based websites.

During the poker craze of the early 2000s, commercials for various sites hosting live poker were as unavoidable as those Draft Kings and Fanduel ads that caught the attention of the federal government — and EVERYONE ELSE IN NORTH AMERICA — during the past football season. In the same vein, the federal government’s crackdown on sports betting and online poker in the last decade pushed some sites to register in Latvia.

Nevertheless, every college football offseason at various points, Bovada issues updated Heisman odds. The newest have 2015 runner-up Christian McCaffrey third behind Fournette and 2015 third-place finisher Deshaun Watson. Tennessee quarterback Josh Dobbs skyrocketed from 33-to-1 to 16-to-1, while Lamar Jackson and Trevor Knight went from Off The Board to 50-to-1.

Baylor’s Jarrett Stidham is available at 28-to-1, though he’s not guaranteed to start ahead of teammate Seth Russell. Both Malik Zaire and Deshone Kizer are also at 28-to-1, though only one can play for the Fighting Irish. I guess that’s what you’d call hedging your bet.

So what’s this all mean? Not much, is my guess. I can interpret online gambling about as well as I can Latvian. I can offer up this advice, however:
Be wary of investing too heavily into the Heisman odds of an unproven commodity.

Latvian prime minister Laimdota Straujuma stepped down Dec. 7, the same week the finalists for the 2015 Heisman Trophy were announced. Her abrupt resignation less than two years on the job threw the Latvian government and economy into disarray.

I can only assume she was all-in on Auburn quarterback Jeremy Johnson at 10-to-1.
