Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher both came out in favor of a college football commissioner; a figurehead who could bring a level of uniformity to the sport.

Recent news underscores the value of universal governance, from the benign — the flap over satellite camps, for example — to the serious, like coach-imposed transfer restrictions.

A college football commissioner could address certain issues and bring the game a more universal direction. On the flip side, the concept of a commissioner stands in opposition to the very essence of amateurism.

Installing a commissioner would also move the college football just one step closer to becoming NFL Lite, a process that with every new year seems more likely.
