The first college football game of the 2015 season is a mere 17 days away, or two weeks from this Saturday. If you haven’t yet circled Aug. 29 on your calendar, the official Montana football hype video should change that.
This year’s Week 0 Football Championship Subdivision showcase has four-time defending national champion North Dakota State visiting Missoula, Montana, where #StittHappens for the first time.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Griz first-year head coach Bob Stitt, the below Fox Sports primer offers some insight into his coaching philosophy at Div. II Colorado School of Mines.
Stitt’s high-tempo, unrelenting pass attack poses an interesting challenge to North Dakota State’s proven strategy of physical domination up front. The Bison are prohibitive favorites to five-peat as FCS champs in the coming season.
And North Dakota State has its own reason to feel confident in the passing game. Returning quarterback Carson Wentz is an NFL talent, his former coach and current Wyoming sideline general Craig Bohl told me.
Wentz finished 13th nationally in passing yards last season with 3,111, bringing a new dimension to the Bison’s grinding run game.
With each day on the countdown to Week 0, this one feels all the more exciting. A coach whose aura borders on the mythical? One of the best quarterbacks in the FCS? The subdivision’s most boisterous fan base? Brent Musburger?
I suggest giving the video atop this column a few more watches to get in the right frame of mind for what could be the best game of college football’s first month.
