Arizona-Arizona State Confusion Remains Confusing

Can you imagine the uproar if ESPN routinely referred to Alabama as the Tigers, or Florida State as the Gators? What if Johnny Manziel’s Heisman Trophy had been shipped to Mack Brown’s office? That would be doubly upsetting, because we all know safeties don’t win the Heisman (drink).

And yet, this is the kind of affront Arizona and Arizona State must endure regularly. The latest installment?

The American Football Coaches Association sent Arizona running back Ka’Deem Carey’s 2013 All-America plaque to Tempe. If that sentence doesn’t make you cringe, the following lesson is meant for you.

Arizona-Arizona State is one of the longer running and more bitter rivalries going in college sports. For those unfamiliar with its origins–hello, folks in Bristol!–I’ve addressed the nature of the Duel in the Desert in the past on this very website.

Visit the Grand Canyon State sometime, and you’ll quickly learn that Wildcats and Sun Devils agree on almost nothing. But one point on which the two sides can come to a vehement accord is that the rest of the nation needs to get the two programs straight.
