The 2014 edition of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is another three months away, but the annual rivalry pitting the Georgia Bulldogs vs Florida Gators maybe kinda sorta got off to an early start, thanks to reality TV and Twitter.
Season…14? 17? Who’s even keeping track?…of The Bachelorette came to a close Monday night, and it was cause for celebration in Athens.
Sic em! Great day to be a Dawg’s wife!!

Yes, that’s Georgia head coach Mark Richt tweeting in response to a quasi-reality game show. Spurring Richt’s excitement: Bachelorette Andi chose Josh Murray, brother of former Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray, in Monday’s finale.
Social media was abuzz with Georgia chatter throughout the highly rated program. What’s a Bulldog rival to do?
Well, Florida head coach Will Muschamp tweeted about his “track record of developing defensive players.” Without context, it appears the tweet was directed at no one in particular, despite the use of the second person.
Given some background, Muschamp publicly tweeted what was intended to be a direct message to recruit earlier this month. Monday night’s tweet would seemingly suggest more of the same.
But let’s examine further, shall we? The time stamp reads 8:58 p.m. ET–right in the thick of The Bachelorette finale. Muschamp usurped some of that social media spotlight Georgia commanded Monday night.
And hey; while the Bulldogs were recruiting a reality show performer into the fold, Muschamp was pursuing defensive talent. So advantage: Florida. I guess?
Muschamp deleted the tweet not long after, so it’s shelf life was only slightly shorter than the average Bachelor or Bachelorette relationship.
Personally, I think it’s just the Disney Corp., using one of its properties to prop the SEC. The SEC Network launch is just a few weeks away, after all.
